SALALAH: Qairoon Hairiti Farm, affiliated with the Royal Court Affairs (RCA), has successfully cultivated cocoa following more than a decade of research, development, propagation and field trials.

The cocoa tree is an evergreen tropical species that requires careful management throughout its growth stages. Its distinctive pods grow directly from the trunk and main branches, gradually changing colour as they mature.

Mohammed bin Ahmed al Mashikhi, Head of the Agricultural Services Department, said cocoa is among the most valuable tropical crops due to its high economic potential. Cultivation trials at Qairoon Hairiti Farm began in 2016 to assess the crop’s adaptability to the climatic conditions of Dhofar Governorate.

Al Mashikhi explained that the Dhofar khareef season, particularly September, provides the most suitable conditions for planting cocoa due to the high temperatures and humidity. Flowering occurs in February and March, while harvesting takes place in September and October.

Cocoa trees typically grow between three and eight metres in height, although their growth is controlled through regular pruning. The pods measure between 15 and 25 centimetres in length.

After harvesting, the cocoa beans are extracted from the pods and fermented for several days before being dried, roasted and ground. Cocoa powder is widely used in the manufacture of chocolate, pharmaceutical products and cosmetics, while the outer husks are used as organic fertiliser.

Salim bin Ahmed al Shahri, Plant Protection Specialist, said the cocoa trees at Qairoon Hairiti Farm receive continuous monitoring and care to protect them from pests and maintain the quality of the harvest.
